Our Founder
Sameerah Saadiq M.Ed., BA
I am a dedicated educator and entrepreneur, originally from Louisville, Kentucky, with more than a decade of experience in early childhood education. I hold master’s degrees in both Business Administration and Early Childhood Education and a Montessori teaching certification. Guided by my passion for supporting families and fostering community growth, I founded Al-Wali Montessori Center, an early learning center located in Detroit.
Committed to serving families—especially during times of need—I have worked to create a warm, inclusive, and supportive environment for countless children and their families. In 2016, I was honored to receive the Motor City Match award and establish a key partnership with Matrix Human Services CCP, both of which have played a pivotal role in the center’s growth and community impact.
Since its inception, Al-Wali Montessori Center has employed more than 50 staff members and invested in their professional growth by funding multiple Child Development Associate (CDA) credential programs. My leadership is strengthened by a team of dedicated full-time educators, community partners, and family advocates who share my vision.
Looking ahead, I remain committed to my work in Detroit, with a steadfast goal to contribute to the city’s development and leave it even better than when I first arrived nearly 20 years ago.
What Is Montessori?
Montessori is an educational approach that focuses on helping children become independent, confident, curious learners through hands-on experiences and a thoughtfully prepared environment.
It was developed by Maria Montessori. Instead of having every child complete the exact same activity at the same time, Montessori give children opportunities to explore, make choices, practice skills, and learn at their own developmental pace, with teachers guiding and observing their progress.
For young children, Montessori education commonly emphasizes:
Movement, social-emotional growth, and care for themselves and their environment. Materials are typically placed where children can access them independently, and activities are designed to encourage concentration and purposeful learning.
For example, rather than always doing something for a toddler, a Montessori teacher may patiently help the child learn how to put away a toy, pour from a small cup, wash their hands, choose an activity, clean up after themselves, or complete an age-appropriate task independently.
Our Educators
Director
Malaikah Saadiq, BA
I hold a Associates in Fashion Design, as well as a Bachelors in Early Childhood Education and a Montessori Assistant Teacher Training Certificate. For the past three years, I have had the privilege of serving as Director at Al-Wali Montessori Center. My passion for early childhood education and child development was sparked during my time working as a teacher’s aide, where I gained valuable insight into the capacity of young minds.
I have come to deeply appreciate that children absorb not only knowledge but also the behaviors and attitudes modeled around them. With this understanding, I am fully committed to setting a positive example and fostering an environment that is safe, nurturing, and conducive to the healthy growth and development of every child in our care

Do children need to be potty trained?
We do not discriminate against children who are still in the process of potty training. While we are not a potty-training facility and our staff cannot provide hands-on assistance with toileting, we will encourage and remind children to use the restroom throughout the day. For children who are still potty training, pull-ups may be used during nap time to help prevent accidents and ensure their comfort.
How does Al-Wali support children who are new to school?
We understand that beginning school can be a major transition for young children and their families. Our teachers work to create a warm, consistent, and nurturing environment where children can gradually become comfortable with their classroom, teachers, routines, and peers. We also have an initial probationary period to ensure that our program is the right fit for your child and family. If we determine that another learning environment may better meet your child’s needs, we will communicate openly with your family and, when possible, recommend other programs or resources in the area that may be a better fit.
How do teachers communicate with families?
We value open and consistent communication between our families and educators. To help families stay connected, we use the Brightwheel app for classroom communication, important school announcements, updates, and information regarding your child’s needs. After enrollment, your family will be set up with a Brightwheel account, giving you convenient access to school updates and direct messaging with your child’s teachers.
Where can I enroll my child?
